Round Hill with Breathtaking 180º Views of Long Island Sound

|
Impressive conical gateposts and major gates bracket the broad, sweeping driveways. The first glimpses of the amazing view delights the eye on the turn towards the inner gates which open to the magnificent courtyard paved in cut stone in a subtle and beautiful pattern leading to the entrance. The architecture has incredible character with intricate stonework and brickwork, leaded windows, leaded gutters and leaders with cast patterns, and this is crowned by a thick Ludowici tile roof. A broad terrace adjoining a boxwood garden is the way to the front door set in a conical tower - a lovely approach to a circular vestibule. The center hall with glowing, wide-board floors, two powder rooms and a wet bar opens to the glorious English sitting room with a major fireplace and the carved stairway curving gracefully in a two-story window bay with distant views over the rear lawns. The living room with a fireplace has a classical parquet floor, windows on three exposures and carved, linenfold doors at the entrance. The panelled library with a fireplace has three exposures, a wonderful bay window and french doors to the garden. The formal dining room with a fireplace and french doors to the terraces has generous proportions and the main floor home theater is quite fabulous with a lobby for a wet bar and a popcorn machine and luxurious chairs to settle back into for an evening at the movies. A classical pantry with Monel counters opens to the kitchen with a center table and last-word appliances including the ultimate LaCornu stove, a breakfast room overlooking the garden and a vestibule with a door to the terrace sheltered by a cheerful awning for outdoor living. The back pantry opens to the laundry and mudroom area, and the rear circular stairs are impressive rising in a wide radius curve up to the top floor in this tower. There is an entrance to the inviting indoor pool surrounded by a mahogany topped sitting wall with windows on one side and glass doors to an attached greenhouse/winter garden on the other. In addition, there is access to a pool changing area, a bathroom, a sauna, two of the eight garages and also on the main floor is a marvelous two-story exercise room complete with a staircase directly to the second floor. The low-riser main stairway curves in the two-story window bay to a magnificent double-height sitting room. There are two master suites, each with three exposures, (one has a fireplace and french doors to a balcony), a dressing room, a glorious bathroom and a charming private circular vestibule connects them both. There are four additional family bedrooms, each with a bathroom, a large family room with views front and back and a front-to-back office panelled in warm curly maple(these each could be bedrooms) and a suite with a bedroom, a wet bar and a bath. A hidden winding stairway leads to the billiards room at the top of the house and commanding views of the countryside with Long Island Sound and the New York City skyline twinkling at night. There is additional space on this floor, originally designed as a staff apartment. Gardens and lawns surround this remarkable property giving it an appeal unmatched by any other place in Greenwich with the backdrop of these incredible views of the Sound yet with total privacy from this point "on top of the world". A teahouse porch adjoining the garden walls is a delight and there is a beautiful pool, a hidden tennis court and a large greenhouse. This estate is the ultimate in terms of view, location, architecture and quality - there is only one of these and it is a must see for anyone who wants the best.
